Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum
The Hector Pieterson Museum is a must visit while you’re in Johannesburg. It is one of the best ways to educate yourself on the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. The museum is named after the iconic young boy, Hector Pietersen, who was shot and killed by the police during a peaceful protest against apartheid.
You can learn about how things led up to this point and what drove the nation to stand against injustices. Rated 4.5 stars on Tripadvisor, visitors can easily see the Hector Pieterson Memorial as it’s just outside the museum making for the ideal way to complete the experience.

Vilakazi Street

Many famous South African icons like Benedict Wallet Vilakazi, the poet and first black South African to obtain a doctorate degree and Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, have called this street their home.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who still resides there, can often be seen walking the streets chatting to his neighbours.
Many great men hail from this street that is so rich in history. Take a trip down to Vilakazi Street and feel the history! While in Soweto a visit to the Mandela House Museum is always an interesting stop.
